English 9 Journal Topics 2014-2015
Journals are important activities because they give us opportunities to explore how we feel about ideas and issues in our world and relate them to our lives. After all, so much of what we do while reading literature is reflected in how the ideas and experiences in texts are related to our times, our world, our culture, and our personal lives. In short, reflecting in writing helps to bridge the gap between what happens in a text and our lives.
With that said, here is a pivotal part of your grade for each semester:

With that said, here is a pivotal part of your grade for each semester:
- Once a week (or so), you will be given the opportunity to write in your journal. I will give you prompts each morning for the journal. The prompts will focus on current events, relationships to the text we are reading, and your lives
- To earn credit for every time we write, you must write for the entire 15-20 minutes. Always, Always, Always, keep your pen moving.
Each journal should be:
- A minimum of 150 words.
- Be in standard MLA format.
- Consist of complete sentences and paragraphs.
- Free of spelling, grammatical, punctual errors
- Proofread by a classmate each class writing period

For your extended journal you should:
- Pick your favorite topic
- Develop your initial ideas into a longer essay that is:
- 12 point font, Times New Roman style, and at least 1.5 pages
- Double Spaced
- Develop a unique title
- Carefully proofread
- Complete your work with paragraphs and transitions
